NTA successfully conducts NEET-UG retest for 20+ lakh aspirants across 5,440 centers with 95,000 CCTV cameras amid exam integrity concerns.
The National Test Agency (NTA) conducted the NEET-UG 2026 re-examination on June 21, 2026, with over 20 lakh medical aspirants appearing across 5,440 examination centers in India and 14 international centers. The exam was conducted in 13 languages with unprecedented security measures following allegations of question paper leaks in the original test.
BACKGROUND: The original NEET-UG 2026 examination faced allegations of paper leakage and irregularities, prompting the NTA to announce a re-test. This represents a major challenge to India's medical education entrance examination credibility—the largest standardized medical entrance exam globally. Previous controversies (2024) had already tested public confidence in the NTA.
SECURITY MEASURES: 95,000 CCTV cameras monitored exam centers with 1.38 lakh total surveillance cameras deployed. Enhanced frisking procedures, photographic ID verification, photostat kiosk shutdowns, mobile phone detection systems, and real-time monitoring were implemented. Exam duration extended from 3 hours to 3 hours 15 minutes with additional 15-minute reading time.
EXAM INTEGRITY ISSUES DOCUMENTED: Despite enhanced security, violations were reported including SIM cards hidden in examination center flush tanks, phones smuggled in undergarments, and suspicious materials. These incidents indicate continuing challenges in preventing malpractice.
WHY IT MATTERS: NEET is gateway to medical education affecting livelihoods of 20+ lakh aspirants annually. Exam integrity determines medical education quality and public health outcomes. Government credibility and institutional capacity are at stake.
EXAM ANGLE: Educational governance, examination reform, technology in exams, institutional accountability, student rights.
