National Tiger Conservation Authority initiates SIT investigation into unexpected death of Dudhwa tiger reserve tigress, raising conservation concerns.
The National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA), the apex body overseeing Project Tiger under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, has ordered a Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe into the 'sudden' death of a tigress at Dudhwa Tiger Reserve. The NTCA has also sought a comprehensive detailed report on circumstances leading to the death.
Background: India operates 58 tiger reserves across 18 states covering approximately 72,000 sq km. The Dudhwa Tiger Reserve in Uttar Pradesh is one of the critical tiger habitats. Unexpected tiger deaths warrant investigation to rule out poaching, disease, inadequate care, or infrastructural failures. Previously, 25 of 58 reserves were flagged for priority intervention.
Key Facts: NTCA is investigating whether the death was natural, resulted from negligence, or involved foul play. The probe will examine veterinary care standards, reserve management practices, and habitat conditions.
Why It Matters: Tiger conservation is a national priority and success indicator for India's biodiversity protection. Project Tiger has increased tiger population from ~1,400 (2006) to ~3,700 (2022). Any mortality signals potential systemic failures in reserve management.
Exam Angle: UPSC questions on Project Tiger implementation, NTCA's role, wildlife conservation governance, and India's CITES obligations. Also relevant for environmental law and institutional mechanisms for species protection.
