Home Minister Shah Directs Enhanced Security at All Ports

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has directed officials to enhance security measures at all ports across India, with plans to convene the first comprehensive meeting on coastal border security in coming months. This directive represents escalation of India's maritime security framework following intelligence assessments of emerging threats.

Context: India has 7,517 km of coastline (including islands), 12 major and 187 minor ports handling significant cargo and passenger traffic. Recent intelligence inputs regarding potential maritime security threats have prompted this government-wide push. The focus encompasses port infrastructure security, vessel monitoring, cargo screening, and coordination between maritime agencies.

Key initiatives: (1) Comprehensive coastal border security review; (2) Enhanced protocols at container terminals and bulk cargo facilities; (3) Intelligence sharing between port authorities, Coast Guard, Navy, customs, and state police; (4) Possible upgrades to port surveillance systems; (5) Alignment with international maritime security standards (IMO 2004 ISPS Code compliance).

Significance: India's ports are critical infrastructure handling petroleum products, grain exports, container cargo, and passenger transit.
