India's First Vande Bharat Freight Train Hits 145 kmph in Trial Run

Indian Railways marked a major milestone in logistics infrastructure as India's first Vande Bharat freight train officially commenced its operational trial runs. Designed specifically for fast, high-value freight transportation, the semi-high-speed cargo train successfully attained a maximum speed of 145 kmph during testing on dedicated rail corridors.

The freight variant, built on the automated EMU platform of the passenger Vande Bharat Express, aims to capture market share in express air and road cargo transport. Developed under the Make in India initiative, the train features automated sliding doors, temperature-controlled container compartments, and integrated roller ramps for rapid roll-on/roll-off loading.

Operating at speeds up to 160 kmph, the freight units feature 16-car rake configurations capable of carrying over 260 tonnes of payload. Indian Railways plans to deploy these fast freight corridors between major industrial hubs, including the Delhi-Mumbai and Chennai-Bengaluru trade sectors, significantly cutting transit times by up to 50 percent.
