Indian Railways Expands Kavach 4.0 System Across 1,618 KM Network

Indian Railways announced a major safety infrastructure rollout, expanding the upgraded Kavach 4.0 Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system across 1,618 route kilometers. The expansion covers High-Density Network (HDN) routes under the South Central Railway (SCR) and the newly functional South Coast Railway (ScoR) zones.

Kavach is an indigenously developed Safety Integrity Level 4 (SIL-4) certified ATP system designed by the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO) in collaboration with Indian industry. Kavach 4.0 represents the latest software and hardware iteration featuring enhanced signal-passing-at-danger (SPAD) prevention and automatic speed regulation.

The system operates via direct radio communication, RFID tags fitted along tracks, and loco-Kavach units installed inside train cabs. Key technical capabilities include automatic braking if the driver fails to act, continuous update of movement authority, cab signaling in foul weather, and auto-whistling near level crossing gates.
