Called for faster conversion of indigenous military drone innovations from research laboratories directly to active battlefields.
Air Chief Marshal A.P. Singh, Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), called for a rapid acceleration in the development, testing, and induction of indigenous drone technologies into the Indian Armed Forces. Speaking at a defence technology symposium, the IAF Chief emphasized that technological innovations must move swiftly from research laboratories to active battlefields to meet evolving aerial warfare challenges.
Modern warfare across global conflict zones, including Ukraine and the Middle East, has demonstrated the decisive impact of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), loitering munitions, swarm drones, and counter-drone systems. India has prioritized domestic defence manufacturing under the 'Make in India' and 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' initiatives to reduce reliance on foreign military imports for critical aerial assets.
The Indian Air Force is actively integrating indigenous unmanned platforms, including the Tapas BH-201 medium-altitude long-endurance (MALE) UAV, combat swarm drones, and stealth autonomous platforms developed by DRDO and private defence startups. Strategic initiatives like iDEX (Innovations for Defence Excellence) and the Technology Development Fund (TDF) provide financial support to domestic aerospace innovators.
Accelerating indigenous drone technology enhances operational readiness, self-reliance, and strategic autonomy in national defence. For civil services aspirants, this news is important for UPSC Mains GS Paper III (Defence Technology, Indigenisation of Technology, Internal Security) and SSC General Awareness questions on military appointments and defence technology.
