The Union Government informed Parliament that India’s regional satellite navigation system, NavIC (Navigation with Indian Constellation), currently cannot provide navigation data entirely independently. Technical constraints and component failures within the satellite fleet require hybrid positioning support.
Originally known as IRNSS (Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System), NavIC was designed to provide accurate real-time positioning and timing services over India and a region extending up to 1,500 km from its borders. Independent operation relies on functional atomic clocks aboard a minimum operational constellation of 7 active satellites.
Several older NVS and IRNSS satellites faced atomic clock anomalies, reducing precise signal capabilities. While ISRO is deploying next-generation NVS-series satellites equipped with indigenous Rubidium atomic clocks, the current operational matrix still requires auxiliary positioning inputs for precise civilian navigation applications.
This revelation holds high significance for national technology sovereignty and strategic defense architecture.
