Scientists and leadership teams from the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) conducted a comprehensive joint review of the Chandrayaan-5 mission, officially designated as the Lunar Polar Exploration (LUPEX) mission.
Building upon the success of Chandrayaan-3, which achieved a soft landing near the lunar south pole in 2023, Chandrayaan-5 represents a deeper bilateral space exploration partnership. LUPEX aims to explore the Moon’s permanently shadowed polar regions to analyze the quantity, distribution, and quality of subsurface water ice reserves.
Under the technical division of labor, JAXA is developing the launch vehicle (H3 rocket) and the advanced lunar rover, while ISRO is designing and building the precision lunar lander module. The mission will deploy heavy drilling instruments and onboard laboratories to conduct in-situ chemical and geological experiments on lunar regolith.
