India Prohibits Sheikh Hasina From Political Activities on Indian Soil

The Ministry of External Affairs informed the Parliamentary Standing Committee on External Affairs that former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been strictly instructed not to conduct any political activities or issue public statements during her stay in India. The government reiterated that her presence remains governed purely by safety and temporary humanitarian considerations.

Following widespread civil unrest in Dhaka in mid-2024, Sheikh Hasina resigned and relocated to India, creating sensitive foreign policy choices for New Delhi. India granted her short-term refuge while simultaneously seeking to maintain stable diplomatic and commercial engagements with Bangladesh’s interim administration to preserve regional stability and secure border management.

Officials clarified that host-country protocols under temporary political refuge arrangements strictly bar foreign political figures from organizing rallies, establishing political offices, or issuing provocative declarations. Unregulated political activity on Indian soil could strain cross-border trade, affect minority protection, and complicate bilateral arrangements like the 2013 India-Bangladesh Extradition Treaty.
