Partners with regional payment networks to connect India's UPI across Asia through a hub-based architecture.
Digital payment service provider NTT Data Payment Services announced a initiative to connect India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) with fast payment systems across Asian countries using a unified hub-based architecture. This system aims to bypass the cumbersome process of negotiating separate bilateral payment agreements with individual foreign countries.
Developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) in 2016, UPI forms the core of India’s Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI). Cross-border integration efforts managed by NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL) previously executed direct country-to-country linkages, such as connecting UPI with Singapore’s PayNow, PayNet in Malaysia, and systems in the UAE and France.
The proposed hub architecture functions as a single digital clearing gateway connecting national payment rails across Southeast Asia and East Asia. By standardizing settlement protocols, the hub reduces cross-border remittance costs, improves foreign exchange conversion speed, and simplifies merchant transactions for Indian travelers and small businesses operating abroad.
Expanding UPI's global footprints reinforces India’s technology leadership and drives the internationalisation of the Indian Rupee in trade and tourism. For competitive exams, Prelims tests NPCI’s corporate structure, UPI technology mechanisms, and DPI components, while Mains evaluates fintech diplomacy and cross-border financial integration.
