PM inaugurates Bhogapuram International Airport in Vizianagaram district, boosting connectivity and trade in Uttarandhra.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the greenfield Bhogapuram International Airport in Vizianagaram district of Andhra Pradesh. Developed by the GMR Group, this major infrastructure milestone was completed six months ahead of its scheduled deadline, marking a crucial development step for the northern coastal Uttarandhra region.
The Bhogapuram project was conceived under the public-private partnership (PPP) framework to decongest Visakhapatnam and accelerate economic growth across coastal Andhra Pradesh. Greenfield projects are constructed from scratch on undeveloped land, requiring extensive land acquisition, environmental clearances, and integrated multimodal transportation connectivity links.
In its first operational phase, the airport is engineered to handle six million passengers annually, with a long-term master plan to scale capacity up to 40 million passengers per year. The project integrates state-of-the-art cargo handling infrastructure, modern air traffic systems, and cultural showcases like traditional Dhimsa tribal artwork.
This infrastructure addition is expected to boost industrial corridors, international tourism, and logistics investments across coastal South India. For UPSC and SSC aspirants, this story holds relevance for Prelims questions regarding infrastructure projects and PPP models, as well as Mains GS-III topics on regional development, PM Gati Shakti, and economic infrastructure.
