Ahmedabad is set to receive the Commonwealth Games flag at Glasgow closing ceremony as official host for the 2030 Games.
Ahmedabad is set to formally receive the Commonwealth Games (CWG) flag and Host Baton at the upcoming Glasgow closing ceremony, marking the official transition of hosting rights for the centennial 2030 Commonwealth Games to the Indian city.
The 2030 event will mark 100 years since the inception of the Commonwealth Games, which were first held in Hamilton, Canada, in 1930. India previously hosted the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi in 2010, making the 2030 edition the second time the country will host this international multi-sport event.
The handover signifies India’s expanding capacity to organize massive global sporting spectacles, leveraging world-class sports infrastructure developed at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave in Ahmedabad. The city is also positioning itself as a central venue for India's prospective bid for the 2036 Olympic Games.
Hosting international sports mega-events accelerates urban infrastructure development, sports economy growth, and soft power diplomacy. This event provides valuable material for SSC, Banking, and Railway exams testing international sporting milestones, and UPSC Mains questions regarding sports policy and urban infrastructure expansion.
