In Brief
Strategic import diversification and domestic urea production ensure steady fertilizer supply during kharif crop season.
The Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilisers reported that India successfully prevented major fertiliser shortages during the ongoing 2026 Kharif agricultural season despite trade route disruptions caused by escalating conflict in West Asia. While national urea reserves remain comfortable, government officials issued targeted advisories regarding the tight global supply and elevated international pricing of Di-ammonium Phosphate.
Fertiliser availability is critical for India's food security, supporting major Kharif crops such as rice, sugarcane, cotton, and pulses sown during the Southwest monsoon. To insulate farmers from global price spikes, the Central Government provides financial subsidies through the Nutrient Based Subsidy scheme for Phosphatic and Potassic fertilisers alongside strict price control regulations on indigenous and imported urea.
India relies heavily on West Asian nations like Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the UAE for urea raw materials, while importing significant quantities of rock phosphate and phosphoric acid from Jordan and Morocco. To manage supply risks, India negotiated long-term bilateral agreements with alternative suppliers in West Africa and Russia, mitigating shipping bottlenecks caused by geopolitical conflict along the crucial Red Sea maritime trade routes.
Sustaining agricultural input flows amidst global geopolitical unrest demonstrates the strategic importance of supply chain resilience and proactive economic diplomacy. For UPSC and SSC preparation, this development connects directly to GS Paper 3 Agriculture economics, government subsidy burdens, national fertilizer sector policies, and Prelims questions covering Kharif cropping patterns, essential soil nutrients, and strategic maritime trade routes.
