NSO Periodic Labour Force Survey shows rural unemployment rose to 4.8% and urban to 6.7% in the April-June quarter.
The latest Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) quarterly bulletin released by the National Statistical Office (NSO) indicates a marginal uptick in India's overall unemployment figures for the April-June quarter. Rural unemployment rose to 4.8% from 4.3% in the preceding quarter, while urban unemployment slightly edged up to 6.7% from 6.6%.
The PLFS was launched by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) in April 2017 to estimate key employment and unemployment indicators at more frequent intervals. High-frequency quarterly data is collected for urban areas under the Current Weekly Status (CWS), while both rural and urban sectors are surveyed annually using Usual Status and CWS approaches.
According to the survey, female labor force participation and youth unemployment metrics continue to reflect structural shifts in agricultural and service sectors. The data highlights seasonal fluctuations in agrarian labor demand during the pre-monsoon quarter alongside urban formal employment absorption trends.
For competitive exams, official government survey metrics are routinely tested in Indian Economy papers. Aspirants should focus on definitions of Current Weekly Status, Usual Status, Worker Population Ratio (WPR), and Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR) for Prelims MCQs and Mains employment analysis.
