SEBI relaxes KYC compliance norms for non-resident Indians and foreign nationals to streamline capital inflows into Indian markets.
The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) issued a circular introducing significant relaxations in Know Your Client (KYC) documentation processes for individual Persons Resident Outside India (PROI). The regulatory ease applies to Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), Overseas Citizens of India (OCIs), and foreign individual investors entering Indian capital markets through registered market intermediaries.
Previously, foreign individual investors faced severe operational friction due to strict physical re-verification procedures, in-person verification requirements, and localized apostille documentation standards. These procedural hurdles frequently led to account freezes and hindered portfolio investment flows, especially following SEBI’s updated risk-based KYC master circulars introduced earlier to combat money laundering.
Under the newly simplified framework, SEBI permits digital onboarding using video-based customer identification processes (V-CIP) verified through international mobile numbers and foreign government-issued identity documents. Furthermore, periodic KYC updates can now be completed via secure electronic signatures, reducing documentation cycle times from several weeks to less than 48 hours for global retail capital.
This policy initiative enhances India's attractiveness as an investment destination, boosting liquidity across domestic equity and debt segments while maintaining robust Financial Action Task Force (FATF) anti-money laundering standards. It is highly relevant for banking and financial services exams, including SEBI Grade A, RBI Grade B, and UPSC Economy Mains Paper III.
