In Brief
Bhubaneswar space startup tests microgravity drug synthesis in orbit, advancing India's commercial bio-manufacturing capabilities.
A deep-tech space startup based in Bhubaneswar successfully conducted an orbital experiment focused on pharmaceutical manufacturing under microgravity conditions. The payload was deployed into Low Earth Orbit (LEO), making it India's first private space-biotech mission aimed at synthesizing high-purity protein crystals and therapeutic drug compounds beyond Earth's atmosphere.
Microgravity environment provides a unique physical regime where gravity-driven convection, sedimentation, and buoyancy forces are virtually eliminated. This allows pharmaceutical researchers to grow larger, near-perfect protein crystals and formulate novel molecular structures that are physically impossible to synthesize within terrestrial laboratory settings, revolutionizing targeted disease therapies.
The automated payload capsule integrated specialized microfluidic hardware, environmental monitoring sensors, and real-time telemetry systems to execute autonomous biochemical reactions during its orbital path. The payload was developed under technical guidance provided by the Indian Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe), reflecting India's expanding private space technology ecosystem under the Space Policy 2023.
This achievement positions India among an elite group of nations developing orbital bio-manufacturing infrastructure, opening new avenues for commercial space research and pharmaceutical exports. For aspirants, this story is vital for UPSC Prelims space science MCQs and Mains GS Paper III (Science and Technology developments and application in daily life).
