In Brief
Partners with NASA to explore permanent lunar human settlements near the water-ice-rich lunar south pole region.
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has formally invited the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to participate in its international lunar base project. The initiative aims to construct a permanently inhabited human outpost near the Moon's south pole. This region is strategically selected because it receives extended periods of continuous sunlight for solar power generation and harbors vast deposits of water ice trapped within permanently shadowed craters.
The collaboration builds upon India signing the Artemis Accords in June 2023, a non-binding multilateral agreement establishing principles for civil space exploration and resource utilization. ISRO's landmark Chandrayaan-3 mission in August 2023 made India the first country to soft-land near the lunar south pole, demonstrating advanced soft-landing capabilities and providing vital terrain and regolith data that directly complements NASA's Artemis lunar architecture.
Under the proposed partnership, ISRO may contribute heavy-payload landing systems, joint astronaut missions, and lunar surface rover technologies. Key scientific targets include harvesting lunar water ice for life support and propellant production, establishing long-duration life support systems, and conducting deep-space observational astronomy. The project aims for operational surface infrastructure establishing continuous human presence before the end of the current decade.
This story carries immense significance for GS Paper III under Science and Technology (Space Technology and International Collaborations). Questions in Prelims can focus on Artemis Accords, lunar polar water ice, and Chandrayaan payload objectives, while Mains questions may test India's growing role in global space governance and commercial space diplomacy.
