Simplify Know Your Customer norms for foreign individuals, NRIs, and OCIs to boost capital market inflows.
The Securities and Exchange Board of India has introduced relaxed Know Your Customer norms for individual Persons Resident Outside India, including Non-Resident Indians, Overseas Citizens of India, and foreign nationals. The regulatory decision aims to streamline the onboarding process, eliminate cumbersome documentation procedures, and foster greater foreign capital participation in domestic equity, debt, and mutual fund markets.
Previously, foreign individual investors faced stringent verification requirements, requiring physical document attestation through Indian embassies or overseas notary authorities, leading to operational delays and procedural friction. Under the revised framework, SEBI allows digital verification mechanisms, accepted equivalent foreign identification documents, and simplified risk-based due diligence standards, aligning Indian financial regulatory frameworks with global best practices and ease of doing business goals.
Key operational changes under the modified regulations include allowing foreign entities and individuals to complete registration via simplified online portals operated by registered KYC Registration Agencies. Furthermore, periodic re-KYC updates can now be conducted digitally unless significant changes occur in the investor's risk profile or residential status, directly benefiting thousands of NRI investment accounts.
This development is highly important for UPSC General Studies Paper Three and Banking exams, covering capital market regulation, Foreign Portfolio Investment, and regulatory reforms. Questions in competitive exams frequently focus on SEBI's regulatory mandate, mechanisms to attract foreign indirect investment, financial inclusion of diaspora wealth, and measures to combat money laundering through standardized KYC protocols.
