In Brief
Reiterated support for a viable, independent Palestinian state while expressing concern over Gaza humanitarian crisis.
At an official diplomatic briefing, India's Ministry of External Affairs reiterated its longstanding policy advocating for a negotiated two-state solution to establish a sovereign, independent, and viable State of Palestine living within secure and recognized borders alongside Israel. Senior diplomatic officials also conveyed deep concern over the ongoing humanitarian situation in Gaza and urged unhindered relief delivery.
India's foreign policy on West Asia has historically balanced strong strategic, technological, and defence ties with Israel alongside consistent diplomatic support for the Palestinian national cause. India was among the first non-Arab countries to recognize the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) as the sole legitimate representative of the Palestinian people in 1974.
India continues to provide developmental assistance, capacity-building grants, and humanitarian relief supplies to Palestinians through bilateral channels and UN agencies such as UNRWA. Maintaining a balanced stance in the Middle East is vital for India's strategic interest in ensuring regional stability, energy security, and the safety of the large Indian diaspora in the Gulf.
For competitive exams, this is a prime topic under UPSC GS Paper 2 (International Relations - Bilateral & Regional Groupings). Aspirants must understand the historical evolution of India's West Asia policy, De-hyphenation strategy, two-state parameters, and UN resolutions regarding West Asia.
