In Brief
Signs Memorandum of Arrangement between Indian Navy and JMSDF to bolster operational coordination in the Indo-Pacific.
India and Japan signed a comprehensive Memorandum of Arrangement (MoA) aimed at significantly deepening maritime security cooperation. The bilateral agreement establishes a formal framework for closer operational coordination between the Indian Navy and the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) across the broader Indo-Pacific region.
This pact builds upon existing bilateral frameworks, including the Acquisition and Cross-Servicing Agreement (ACSA) signed in 2020 and regular joint naval exercises like Malabar and JIMEX. The evolving strategic dynamics in the Indian Ocean and South China Sea have prompted both nations to intensify their defense partnership under the Quad and bilateral 2+2 mechanisms.
The MoA focuses on enhanced real-time domain awareness, anti-submarine warfare exercises, interoperability drills, and reciprocal logistical support. It also establishes joint protocol mechanisms for maritime search-and-rescue operations and combined anti-piracy patrols in vital sea lanes of communication.
This development strengthens India's 'Act East' policy and Japan's 'Free and Open Indo-Pacific' (FOIP) vision. Aspirants should note this for UPSC GS-II International Relations (Bilateral Agreements) and GS-III Security Challenges, as well as defence-related questions in SSC and Banking exams.
