Warns Centre of direct judicial orders if FSSAI delays mandatory front-of-pack nutrition warnings (FOPL) on processed foods.
The Supreme Court of India warned the Union Government and the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) that it will issue direct enforcement mandates if the regulatory body fails to finalize Front-of-Pack Labeling (FOPL) guidelines quickly. The court was hearing a petition advocating clear warning labels on packaged ultra-processed foods.
Front-of-Pack Labeling aims to provide consumers with clear, upfront indicators regarding high levels of sugar, salt, and saturated fats in packaged edibles. While public health activists advocate for high-visibility warning labels (like black octagons), industry bodies have lobbied for Health Star Rating systems, delaying consensus.
The SC highlighted the rising incidence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as diabetes, hypertension, and childhood obesity in India. The bench emphasized that the Right to Health is an integral component of the Right to Life guaranteed under Article 21 of the Constitution.
This topic links public health policy, regulatory bodies (FSSAI under the FSS Act, 2006), and Article 21 rights. It forms an excellent case study for UPSC GS-II (Governance/Public Health) and GS-III (Consumer Protection).
