External Affairs Ministry confirms 22 Indian crew members aboard hijacked merchant vessels off Somalia and Yemen are safe.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed that 22 Indian national seafarers serving aboard two foreign-flagged commercial vessels hijacked in the Gulf of Aden and off the Somali coast are secure, with diplomatic and maritime security efforts underway to facilitate their clearance.
The Arabian Sea and Western Indian Ocean region have witnessed renewed maritime security challenges, including piracy attempts and attacks on commercial shipping lanes. The Indian Navy, through its anti-piracy deployments under Operation Sankalp, maintains continuous maritime domain awareness across critical sea lines of communication (SLOCs).
India is a major supplier of global maritime manpower, accounting for over 10% of global seafarers. Protecting merchant mariners in high-risk area designations involves coordination between the Indian Navy, Information Fusion Centre – Indian Ocean Region (IFC-IOR), and international maritime security task forces operating in the zone.
This development highlights India's role as a net security provider in the Indian Ocean Region. Prelims questions may cover maritime geography and anti-piracy mechanisms like IFC-IOR, while Mains questions examine regional maritime security policy and naval diplomacy.
