Runs its first 1.3-km double-stack container train to boost heavy-haul freight capacity and lower logistics costs.
Indian Railways marked a major infrastructure milestone by successfully running its first 1.3-kilometer-long double-stack container train. The super-long freight operational run was executed along dedicated freight trackage, showcasing enhanced heavy-haul capabilities designed to significantly reduce freight transport turnaround times and lower overall national logistics expenses.
Double-stack container trains carry two layers of intermodal shipping containers stacked atop each wagon, requiring specialized high-reach overhead equipment (OHE) and reinforced track infrastructure. The development aligns with the operationalization of the Dedicated Freight Corridors (DFCs)—specifically the Western and Eastern DFCs—conceived to segregate freight from passenger traffic and double line carrying capacities.
The 1.3-km long train composition featured combined multi-rake configurations pulled by high-horsepower electric locomotives, exceeding standard freight train lengths of roughly 700 meters. The freight movement demonstrated an increase in haulage efficiency of over 80 percent per trip, moving cargo equivalent to hundreds of heavy commercial trucks off national highways onto energy-efficient rail networks.
Lowering logistics costs from the current ~13-14% of GDP down to single digits is a key pillar of National Logistics Policy 2022 and PM Gati Shakti framework. For competitive exams like Railway Recruitment Board (RRB), SSC CGL, and UPSC Prelims, this landmark achievement represents a key fact regarding Indian infrastructure, green freight transport, and dedicated corridor operations.
