Selected industrial partners for 'AssamSAT', becoming the first Indian state to develop its own satellite system.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the state government is in the final stages of selecting technical partners to design, construct, and launch 'AssamSAT'. The dedicated satellite initiative marks a historic transition, making Assam the first state in India to evolve from being a passive consumer of satellite data into an active builder within the space technology ecosystem.
The 'AssamSAT' project is aimed at transforming state-level governance through real-time geospatial analytics, flood monitoring, environmental conservation, and evidence-based policy formulation. Given Assam's unique geographical vulnerabilities, such as recurring seasonal floods along the Brahmaputra river basin and severe riverbank erosion, custom space-borne monitoring will provide critical situational awareness for disaster management authorities.
The satellite system will utilize high-resolution remote sensing imagery and Earth observation payloads tailored to regional topographical requirements. It will support agricultural yield planning, forest cover mapping in biodiversity hotspots, land record digitization, and infrastructure development tracking across rural and urban administrative districts.
