Permitted Foreign Portfolio Investors to submit digitally signed Power of Attorney documents to streamline onboarding.
Capital markets regulator Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) issued a circular allowing Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs) to submit digitally signed Power of Attorney (PoA) documents during their onboarding process. The regulatory relaxation aims to enhance operational ease, reduce processing timelines, and promote seamless foreign capital entry into Indian capital markets.
Foreign Portfolio Investment plays a pivotal role in maintaining liquidity and driving asset price discovery across Indian equity and debt markets. Under the SEBI (Foreign Portfolio Investors) Regulations, 2019, prospective FPIs must undergo rigorous Know Your Customer (KYC) verification and submit designated legal authorisations to Designated Depository Participants (DDPs) before executing trades.
Previously, FPIs were required to submit physical, wet-signed, and consularised or apostilled PoA documents, which led to significant administrative delays and transaction overheads. Under the new digital authorization framework, SEBI permits electronic signatures verified under recognized digital certification frameworks, bringing FPI onboarding procedures in line with global best practices.
This regulatory move is essential for students preparing for UPSC GS Paper III Indian Economy and SSC CGL Financial Awareness. Aspirants must focus on FPI versus FDI distinctions, capital account convertibility concepts, regulatory functions of SEBI, and potential Prelims MCQs regarding foreign portfolio flow mechanisms and DDP roles.
