Indian Navy to Commission Indigenous Diving Support Vessel Nipun on Aug 31

The Indian Navy is scheduled to commission its second indigenously designed and built Diving Support Vessel (DSV), 'Nipun', on August 31, 2026. The vessel was formally delivered to the Navy following extensive sea trials and outfitting programs. Designed to conduct deep-sea diving operations and submarine rescue missions, INS Nipun represents a strategic enhancement in India's naval capabilities across the Indian Ocean Region.

DSVs are specialized naval platforms designed to deploy deep-sea submersibles, conduct underwater salvage operations, and support submarine rescue missions. Nipun, alongside its sister ship Nistar, was constructed by Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL) in Visakhapatnam under the Make in India initiative. These vessels replace legacy diving support platforms, significantly enhancing the Navy's operational self-reliance under the Atmanirbhar Bharat vision.

INS Nipun features an overall length of 118 meters and displaces approximately 9,350 tonnes. It is equipped with advanced Deep Submergence Rescue Vehicle (DSRV) integration capabilities, side-scan sonars, and atmospheric diving suits capable of operating at extreme ocean depths. The vessel can also perform search and rescue (SAR) missions and underwater surveillance across coastal and blue-water maritime domains.
