Pledges deeper strategic cooperation with Uzbekistan spanning trade, culture, energy, and defence sectors.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, for a high-level bilateral summit with President Shavkat Mirziyoyev. The leaders held extensive talks focused on strengthening strategic ties across key priority sectors including trade, regional security, digital connectivity, culture, and energy. The visit underscores India's active diplomatic push under its 'Extended Neighbourhood' policy to enhance engagement with Central Asian nations.
Central Asia holds significant geopolitical and strategic importance for India, serving as a critical bridge to Eurasia and energy resources. India and Uzbekistan share a long-standing strategic partnership established in 2011, with bilateral mechanisms covering trade, defence cooperation, and cultural exchanges. India has also extended soft loans and lines of credit for infrastructure and developmental projects in Uzbekistan over recent years.
Key areas of bilateral discussion included expanding trade pathways via the Chabahar Port and International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC), military training exercises like EX-DUSTLIK, and energy sector cooperation. Additionally, joint educational initiatives and pharmaceutical partnerships remain central pillars of bilateral economic interaction, aiming to increase trade turnover beyond current historic benchmarks.
For UPSC and SSC aspirants, this development holds high relevance under International Relations and India's Foreign Policy. Potential exam questions could focus on Central Asia regional grouping, INSTC route significance, or bilateral joint military exercises like DUSTLIK in Prelims, while Mains questions may analyze India's strategic outreach in Central Asia.
