Former RAW Chief Emphasizes Strategic Role of RAW and IB in National Security Architecture

In a strategic assessment of India's national security, a former chief of the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) highlighted that RAW and the Intelligence Bureau (IB) constitute the nation's primary arms of offence and defence. The statement underlines the critical role of foreign and domestic intelligence gathering amidst evolving regional dynamics.

Historically, foreign intelligence was handled by the IB until the 1962 Sino-Indian War and 1965 Indo-Pak War exposed institutional gaps. Consequently, RAW was created in 1968 under the leadership of K.N. Kao as a specialized external intelligence agency directly reporting to the Prime Minister's Office.
