Public Health Experts Advocate Typhoid Vaccine Integration into Immunization Schedule

Leading public health specialists and epidemiologists issued a consensus recommendation urging the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare to integrate Typhoid Conjugate Vaccines (TCV) into India's flagship Universal Immunization Programme (UIP). The call comes amid growing clinical concern over the widespread empirical misuse of antibiotics leading to Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) in *Salmonella enterica* serovar Typhi strains across the country.

Typhoid fever is a life-threatening bacterial disease transmitted through contaminated food and water. While older polysaccharide vaccines offered short-lived protection and were ineffective in infants, Typhoid Conjugate Vaccines (TCVs) confer longer-lasting immunity, require fewer doses, and can be administered safely to children under two years of age alongside routine childhood immunizations.

Key technical parameters for examinees: Typhoid is caused by *Salmonella Typhi*. India accounts for a disproportionately high burden of global typhoid cases. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommended TCV for infants above 6 months in typhoid-endemic countries. Integrating TCV into UIP aims to reduce pediatric hospitalization and combat Extensive Drug-Resistant (XDR) typhoid strains resistant to fluoroquinolones and third-generation cephalosporins.
