PM Modi Meets Vladimir Putin at SCO Summit; Urges End to Russia-Ukraine War

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit on September 1, 2026. During the bilateral meeting, India urged Russia to move away from an endless war towards a peaceful resolution of the Ukraine conflict, reiterating that the land of Gandhi and Buddha champions peace over conflict.

The meeting marks their first in-person interaction since the India-Russia Annual Summit held in New Delhi in December 2025. Over the years, India has maintained a balanced diplomatic stance on the Russia-Ukraine crisis, advocating dialogue, diplomacy, and adherence to the UN Charter while continuing strategic and economic ties with Moscow.

Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to the Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership established in 2010. They reviewed bilateral trade targets, energy cooperation, defence logistics, and strategic connectivity corridors including the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC). The SCO, founded in 2001, currently has 10 full members, with India having joined as a full member in 2017.

This development highlights India's strategic autonomy and its proactive role in international peace building.
