In Brief
Defence Ministry issued strict directives to Defence PSUs to reduce import reliance and build domestic supply chain resilience for critical spares.
The Ministry of Defence directed all Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs) to systematically curtail their reliance on foreign military components and establish robust domestic manufacturing ecosystems. The directive comes in response to supply chain vulnerabilities exposed during recent global conflicts.
India has historically been one of the world's largest defense importers. To reverse this, the government launched the 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' initiative in defense manufacturing, introducing Positive Indigenisation Lists (PILs) that ban the import of thousands of defense items, subsystems, and specialized equipment over phased deadlines.
The new guidelines require DPSUs to focus on three critical operational pillars: establishing assured local supply chains, building rapid surge production capacity during wartime scenarios, and creating domestic facilities for fast-track maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) of sophisticated weapons platforms.
This news directly impacts GS Paper III (Indigenisation of Technology and Internal Security). Aspirants should memorize key metrics regarding defense indigenization targets, SRIJAN portal functions, and Defence Acquisition Procedure (DAP) provisions. Objective exams like SSC and CDS frequently test defense PSU names and manufacturing hubs.
