The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) successfully launched the Earth Observation Satellite EOS-05 aboard the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV-F17) from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota. The spacecraft was inserted precisely into a sub-geosynchronous transfer orbit, after which its onboard propulsion systems will position it into its designated 36,000 km geostationary slot.
EOS-05 represents a monumental shift in India's space-based surveillance capability, serving as the nation's first operational continuous-monitoring imaging satellite positioned in a high-altitude geostationary orbit. Traditional remote sensing satellites operate in Sun-Synchronous Low Earth Orbits (LEO) at lower altitudes, whereas geostationary placement allows non-stop, real-time observation over the exact same geographical territory.
Key technical parameters highlight the capability of this heavy payload, which relies on multi-band optical, thermal, and infrared imaging sensors. The GSLV-F17 launch vehicle successfully deployed ISRO's indigenous Cryogenic Upper Stage engine to generate necessary thrust, delivering real-time capabilities crucial for rapid flood mapping, cyclone tracking, agricultural estimation, and border surveillance.
