CBI Conducts Nationwide Raids Across 20 States Against 'Digital Arrest' Cyber Fraud

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) executed a massive coordinated operation across 89 locations spanning 20 States and Union Territories to dismantle transnational 'Digital Arrest' cybercrime syndicates. The investigative agency arrested three key operatives accused of hosting fraudulent infrastructure, managing mule bank accounts, and laundering proceeds generated from intimidating innocent citizens using fake law enforcement personas.

'Digital Arrest' represents an emerging cyber fraud modality where criminals impersonate officials from government agencies like CBI, ED, Telecom Department, or Police via video calls. Fraudsters falsely accuse victims of illegal activities, confining them online under psychological fear until financial transfers are forced. The nationwide crackdown aims to disrupt international networks operating across Southeast Asian cybercrime hubs.

The CBI executed this crackdown utilizing capabilities from the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) under the Ministry of Home Affairs. Key legislative instruments involved include provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, and the Information Technology Act, 2000. Financial intelligence was pooled from the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU-IND) to track illicit cryptocurrency and hawala laundering routes.
