Grants official recognition to India's Carbon Credit Trading Scheme, providing tax relief for Indian exporters under UK CBAM.
The United Kingdom officially recognized India's Carbon Credit Trading Scheme (CCTS) under its Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) framework. This landmark decision enables British importers of eligible Indian industrial goods to claim financial relief against the UK's upcoming carbon border tax, effectively reducing trade friction and protecting Indian export competitiveness across key manufacturing sectors in European and British markets.
The Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism is designed to prevent 'carbon leakage' by applying tariffs on carbon-intensive imports like steel, aluminum, cement, and fertilizers equal to the domestic carbon price paid by local producers. India introduced CCTS under the Energy Conservation (Amendment) Act, 2022, establishing a domestic market-based mechanism to price greenhouse gas emissions and incentivize industrial decarbonization across major energy-intensive sectors.
Under this bilateral alignment, Indian exporters who purchase verified domestic carbon units under the CCTS can offset equivalent tax liabilities under the UK CBAM framework. This eliminates double taxation of carbon emissions for Indian manufacturers entering the UK market. The UK CBAM, set to take full effect alongside similar European Union environmental regulations, targets key emissions-heavy export categories from developing trade partner nations.
This recognition marks a major victory for India's foreign trade diplomacy and environmental policymaking, serving as a vital benchmark for ongoing trade negotiations with the European Union. In civil services exams, Prelims questions frequently cover carbon credit trading concepts, Energy Conservation Act provisions, and CBAM mechanics. Mains questions (GS Paper 3: Economy & Environment) assess carbon border taxes as non-tariff barriers and their economic impact.
