Creates robotic prototype to digitize and preserve fragile historical palm-leaf manuscripts in Kerala.
Two ninth-grade students from Kerala designed a novel robotic prototype specifically engineered to handle, preserve, and digitize ancient palm-leaf manuscripts. The innovation earned national selection to represent India at an upcoming international robotics competition, highlighting youth-led technological applications in heritage conservation.
Palm-leaf manuscripts (Granthas) contain invaluable classical knowledge spanning ancient Indian astronomy, Ayurveda, mathematics, and literature written in scripts like Grantha, Vatteluttu, and Malayalam. Due to biological decay, humidity, and physical brittleness, millions of delicate historical folios risk permanent destruction without careful archival intervention.
The custom-built robotic mechanism uses soft robotic grippers, multispectral imaging sensors, and automated page-turning algorithms to digitize manuscript folios without applying destructive contact pressure. This initiative supports national digitisation drives like the National Mission for Manuscripts (NMM), established in 2003 by the Ministry of Culture.
