Advanced the broad-based Free Trade Agreement toward final approval by the European Council ahead of late 2026 signing.
The European Commission took a decisive step toward concluding the long-negotiated India-European Union Free Trade Agreement (FTA) by submitting key documentation for approval by the European Council in Brussels. This brings both sides closer to formally signing the comprehensive trade and investment pact by the end of 2026.
Negotiations for the India-EU FTA were originally launched in 2007, paused in 2013 due to impasses over tariff reductions and market access, and officially restarted in June 2022. The deal seeks to lower tariffs on goods, liberalise services trade, enhance investment protection, and address geographical indications (GIs).
The European Union is one of India's largest trading partners and investors. Key discussion areas include reduction of import duties on European automobiles and spirits, market access for Indian IT professionals, and alignment regarding the EU's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM).
This update is crucial for UPSC Mains GS-II (Bilateral agreements) and GS-III (Indian Economy & Trade). Questions may focus on trade barriers, CBAM implications for Indian exports, and the strategic importance of the India-EU trade framework.
