Bangladesh Proposes Bilateral Discussions to Reset India Ties

State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir announced Bangladesh’s intention to reset diplomatic relations with India through structured bilateral negotiations. The administration stressed the need to move beyond historical dependence and establish a balanced, mutually beneficial partnership addressing contemporary trade and security priorities.

Relations experienced strain following recent political transitions in Dhaka and the shelter granted to former leadership. India and Bangladesh share a 4,096-kilometer land border—the longest border India shares with any neighbor—and cooperate extensively across cross-border transit, energy grids, and water sharing treaties.

Key bilateral mechanisms involved include the Joint River Commission governing 54 shared rivers, the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) negotiations, and border infrastructure management under the Integrated Check Posts (ICPs). Bilateral trade currently stands as one of South Asia’s largest regional commercial trade corridors.
