AI Sanskrit Heritage Model Launched at Madras Sanskrit College

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman launched the groundbreaking 'AI Sanskrit Heritage Model' at the historic Madras Sanskrit College. Developed using advanced artificial intelligence and optical character recognition techniques, the model aims to digitize, translate, and preserve ancient Sanskrit manuscripts, making India's classical literary heritage globally accessible to researchers and the public.

India possesses one of the world's largest collections of ancient manuscripts written on palm leaves, paper, and bark, dealing with mathematics, astronomy, medicine, and philosophy. However, physical degradation and limited expertise in ancient scripts like Brahmi, Sharada, and Grantha have restricted wider research. The new AI platform automates script parsing, translation, and semantic analysis to bridge this gap.

Founded in 1906, Madras Sanskrit College served as the hub for this initiative. The project leverages generative AI models trained specifically on Classical Sanskrit grammar rules derived from Panini’s Ashtadhyayi. The tool provides real-time translation, audio pronunciation, and interactive contextual explanations in multiple Indian and foreign languages.

This initiative highlights the intersection of modern technology and cultural preservation under the Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS) framework. UPSC Prelims can feature questions on classical language status, manuscript preservation initiatives, and AI governance. Mains GS Paper I (Art & Culture) and Paper III (S&T) can leverage this as an example of leveraging artificial intelligence for heritage preservation.
