PM Modi emphasizes India's reliability in global semiconductor supply chains amid ongoing supply chain weaponisation.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed global tech leaders at the Semicon India 2026 conference, positioning India as a resilient and reliable destination for semiconductor manufacturing amidst rising global concerns regarding the weaponisation of critical technology supply chains.
The conference highlights the progress of the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM), launched under the Digital India initiative to build a robust semiconductor and display fabrication ecosystem. Global disruptions in microchip supply chains during recent geopolitical conflicts have accelerated efforts by major economies to diversify manufacturing away from single-source monopolies.
India has allocated ₹76,000 crore under the ISM to offer up to 50% fiscal support for setting up semiconductor fabs, display fabs, and compound semiconductor facilities. Key milestones include multiple approved OSAT (Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test) plants and fabrication facilities in Gujarat's Dholera and Assam's Morigaon.
Establishing domestic microchip manufacturing enhances India's strategic autonomy and electronic self-reliance. For aspirants, this story connects to UPSC Mains GS-3 (Technology & Industrial Policy) and Prelims questions regarding the India Semiconductor Mission, ISM subsidies, and supply chain resilience initiatives like the Supply Chain Resilience Initiative (SCRI).
