In a major victory for wildlife conservation, a female cheetah born on Indian soil has given birth to four healthy cubs at Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh. This development represents the arrival of second-generation cheetahs under India’s ambitious reintroduction project, demonstrating successful biological adaptation of the translocated species.
Project Cheetah, launched in September 2022, is the world’s first intercontinental wild carnivore translocation project, designed to reintroduce the Asiatic cheetah’s ecological surrogate—the African cheetah—after the species was declared extinct in India in 1952. Translocated animals were brought from Namibia and South Africa to establish a self-sustaining wild population.
The mother cheetah was part of the initial litters born inside Kuno to imported felines. With the birth of these four cubs, the total cheetah population in Kuno, including adults and wild-born cubs, has expanded significantly. Kuno National Park spans over 748 square kilometers in the Vindhyan region, offering optimal grassland habitat for hunting prey.
