Highlights human capital gaps as over 25 percent youth in 250 Indian districts are classified as NEET.
A comprehensive socio-economic survey revealed that in nearly 250 districts across India, more than 25 percent of youth aged 15 to 29 years belong to the "NEET" category—Not in Education, Employment, or Training. The stark figures highlight persistent structural gaps in skill development, education completion, and job creation in rural and semi-urban regions.
The NEET metric is an international indicator established by the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Target 8.6 to measure youth disengagement from the formal economy. India possesses one of the world's largest young populations, but high NEET rates threaten to undermine the potential benefits of its demographic dividend.
The survey assessed youth engagement across 250 key districts, tracking post-secondary education dropouts, vocational skill training participation, and formal-informal employment data. Gender disparities remain acute within the data, with young women forming a disproportionately large share of the inactive NEET group due to domestic obligations and social barriers.
This data is critical for UPSC Mains GS Paper II (Social Justice & Human Resources) and GS Paper III (Indian Economy & Employment). Candidates must memorize key figures for essay writing and answers covering demographic dividend utilization, National Skill Development Mission effectiveness, Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) trends, and SDG achievement.
