India to Launch Seafarer Person-Level Tracking System Amid West Asia Conflict

India's Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways initiated the rollout of a centralized, person-level tracking system for Indian maritime crew working aboard ships globally. The action comes in direct response to heightened security risks and regional instability in West Asia.

Escalating geopolitical conflicts in the Red Sea, Persian Gulf, and Gulf of Aden have endangered commercial shipping lanes. Because Indian seafarers account for approximately 10% of the world's merchant navy workforce, real-time tracking is vital to guarantee rapid response and repatriation during maritime emergencies.

The initiative integrates existing databases managed by the Directorate General of Shipping with global Automatic Identification System (AIS) tracking and vessel reporting platforms. The digital network will directly monitor over 250,000 active Indian seafarers across foreign and domestic vessels.
