In Brief
Experts urge focus on midstream magnet manufacturing to reduce reliance on foreign critical mineral supply chains.
Policy discussions highlighted that despite possessing significant rare-earth element (REE) raw deposits, India faces a critical operational gap in midstream processing and domestic production of Neodymium-Iron-Boron (NdFeB) permanent magnets.
Rare Earth Elements like Neodymium, Dysprosium, and Samarium are necessary inputs for electric vehicle (EV) motors, wind power generators, defence electronics, and precision guidance systems. Global processing chains are currently concentrated, with China controlling over 80% of refined magnet manufacturing.
India holds the 5th largest rare-earth reserves globally, managed primarily by state-owned Indian Rare Earths Limited (IREL). However, value-addition from raw monazite sands to high-performance sintered magnets remains an industrial bottleneck under the National Critical Minerals Mission.
Building domestic midstream magnet manufacturing is essential to secure India's clean energy transition and defence production autonomy. This topic is central to UPSC GS-3 questions on Science & Technology, critical minerals, and industrial indigenisation.
