In Brief
The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has notified a comprehensive regulatory framework enabling Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) to issue Depository Receipts (DRs) on permissible foreign bourses, unlocking international institutional capital and boosting liquidity for commercial real estate.
Under the new SEBI guidelines issued pursuant to the Depository Receipts Scheme 2014 and FEMA, listed REITs compliant with SEBI norms can issue Depository Receipts abroad against their underlying domestic units held by an Indian custodian. The framework allows foreign investors in FATF/IOSCO-compliant jurisdictions to invest in Indian real estate assets through their local exchanges in foreign currency.
