Chief of Army Staff General Dhiraj Seth commenced an official visit to Nepal to strengthen bilateral military ties and advance strategic defense cooperation between the two neighboring nations. During the visit, General Seth will participate in an investiture ceremony at the Rashtrapati Bhawan in Kathmandu, where the President of Nepal will formally confer upon him the honorary rank of General of the Nepali Army. This visit underscores a unique historic military tradition dating back to 1950, where India and Nepal mutually confer the honorary rank of General on each other's army chiefs. The tradition symbolizes the deep-rooted cultural, historical, and strategic ties between the two armed forces, which share extensive institutional cooperation, joint military exercises, and a large population of Gurkha veterans residing within both sovereign territories. Key highlights of the bilateral defense partnership include the annual joint military exercise Surya Kiran, institutional training exchanges, and defense equipment assistance provided by India. The Indian Army also recruits heavily from Nepal's Gurkha community, strengthening people-to-people relations. Discussions during this visit focus on regional security architecture, border management, joint disaster relief operations, and military hardware modernization programs. This event is highly relevant for UPSC General Studies Paper Two under India's Neighborhood First policy and bilateral international relations. Examiners frequently test candidates on military diplomacy, treaties such as the 1950 Treaty of Peace and Friendship, strategic border security dynamics, and India's efforts to balance soft power and defense ties in the immediate Himalayan neighborhood.
