The Ebola virus disease outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has officially become the deadliest in the country's history, with the total death toll reaching 2,325 individuals. World health authorities and global humanitarian agencies have raised severe alarms over the rapid community transmission rates, complicated by armed conflict, population displacement, and damaged healthcare infrastructure across affected eastern administrative provinces. Ebola is a severe, often fatal illness caused by the Ebola virus, a member of the Filoviridae family. First discovered in 1976 near the Ebola River, the virus is transmitted to people from wild animals, such as fruit bats, and subsequently spreads through human-to-human transmission via direct contact with blood, secretions, organs, or other bodily fluids of symptomatic infected individuals. Key epidemiological statistics confirm that the case fatality rate for this specific outbreak stands exceptionally high at over sixty-five percent. Containment efforts involve deploying second-generation viral vaccines, monoclonal antibody therapeutics, contact tracing teams, and strict quarantine protocols. However, local civil unrest, community resistance, and acute operational funding shortages continue to severely hinder emergency global medical responses. This international health emergency is crucial for General Studies Paper Two and Paper Three, covering global health security, World Health Organization emergency declarations, and zoonotic disease management. Questions in civil service exams frequently focus on viral pathogen classifications, international health regulations, epidemiology concepts, and bilateral medical aid provided by India to African nations during global public health crises.
