Archaeologists and heritage experts have renewed technical focus on a massive ancient mound in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, which conceals a Mauryan-era Buddhist stupa dating back to Emperor Ashoka's reign. Originally surveyed nearly ninety years ago, fresh archaeological interest suggests that this ancient brick and stone structure could potentially be larger in dimensions than the UNESCO World Heritage site at Sanchi. Ujjain, historically known as Avantika, served as a crucial political, commercial, and religious hub along the ancient Dakshinapatha trade route during the Mauryan period. Emperor Ashoka served as the Viceroy of Ujjain during his youth under his father Bindusara's reign, making the region a primary center for early Buddhist art, architectural construction, and royal patronages that facilitated the spread of Dhamma across central India. Key features of the Ujjain stupa complex include massive brick masonry foundations, characteristic Mauryan polished stone fragments, and structural elements typical of third-century BCE Buddhist architecture. Scholars believe comprehensive geophysical mapping and controlled scientific excavations could reveal crucial epigraphic inscriptions, monastic complexes, and trade artifacts, offering deeper insights into urban planning and religious geography of ancient Malwa. This topic is highly relevant for UPSC General Studies Paper One under Indian Art, Architecture, and Ancient History. Examiners frequently test candidates on Mauryan architectural evolution, the structural components of Buddhist stupas such as the Torana, Medhi, and Harmika, Ashokan rock edicts, and the historical geography of major trade routes in ancient India.
