The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) announced plans to launch its advanced Earth observation satellite, GISAT-1A, in September 2026, bringing an end to a seven-month operational launch hiatus. Parked at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota alongside the navigation satellite NVS-03, GISAT-1A is designed to deliver near real-time, high-resolution imaging of the Indian subcontinent from a geostationary orbit. Space operations faced brief interruptions earlier in the year following launch vehicle recalibrations and technical evaluations. GISAT-1A represents India's premier continuous monitoring space asset, placing an Earth observation payload into a geostationary orbit roughly 36,000 kilometers above the Equator. Unlike Low Earth Orbit satellites that pass over regions intermittently, a geostationary satellite remains fixed relative to Earth's surface, providing continuous coverage. GISAT-1A weighs approximately 2,268 kilograms and carries multi-spectral and hyper-spectral payloads capable of rapid monitoring of natural disasters, agricultural health, border surveillance, and cloud cover dynamics. The satellite will be launched aboard ISRO's Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV Mk II), which uses an indigenous cryogenic upper stage. The mission will complement India's existing Remote Sensing (IRS) constellation and NavIC navigation system. Real-time geostationary imagery substantially enhances disaster management capabilities and national border security monitoring. For competitive exam candidates, this development provides vital material for UPSC Prelims Science & Tech questions on orbital dynamics, space payloads, and Mains GS Paper III topics on Space Technology applications in governance.
