Government think tank NITI Aayog released a strategic evaluation report highlighting that traditional 'generic' undergraduate degrees—specifically Bachelor of Arts (BA), Bachelor of Science (BSc), and Bachelor of Commerce (BCom)—exhibit weak linkages to current market employment demands. The report urges state governments and universities to urgently restructure these curricula to incorporate vocational training, skill enhancement, and industry-oriented internships. Generic degree courses account for the vast majority of higher education enrollments in India. However, rapidly evolving skill requirements in technology, finance, and services have created a structural disconnect between academic qualifications and job readiness. The recommendations align with the objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which advocates for flexible, multidisciplinary, and skill-based higher education structures. NITI Aayog recommended introducing mandatory credit-based apprenticeship programs, industry integration in syllabus design, and regular employability audits for higher educational institutions. The report also emphasized scaling up short-term skill certifications alongside traditional degree courses to improve transition rates from higher education to the formal labor market. This news is highly relevant for UPSC GS Paper II (Social Justice & Education) and GS Paper III (Indian Economy & Employment). Candidates should be prepared for Mains questions evaluating higher education reforms, skill development initiatives like PMKVY, and strategies to address structural unemployment in India.
