Government focuses on AI integration for new criminal codes; 16 lakh law enforcement personnel trained on Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023.
More than two years after the new criminal laws replaced the 160-year-old Indian Penal Code, the government is intensifying AI adoption for implementation of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023; Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023; and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA), 2023. Approximately 16 lakh law enforcement personnel have received training on these codes.
Background: These three codes replaced the IPC (1860), CrPC (1898), and Indian Evidence Act (1872) effective July 1, 2023. They introduced substantial changes including new offense categories (cybercrimes, digital evidence), modified procedures (faster trial timelines), and enhanced victim protections. However, implementation faced challenges due to capacity gaps and procedural adjustments.
AI Integration Strategy: (1) Automated case categorization; (2) Document management systems; (3) Predictive analytics for court case loads; (4) Digital evidence preservation; (5) Court management systems.
Training scope: Focus on procedural changes, new offense definitions, digital evidence handling, and victim rights provisions.
Why it matters: Digitalizing criminal justice improves efficiency, reduces case backlogs (currently 50+ million pending cases), and enhances transparency. Addresses key NITI Aayog recommendations on judicial reform.
Exam angle: Questions on constitutional amendments, judicial reforms, criminal law reform, digital governance, and institutional capacity. Directly relevant to Mains essays on judicial efficiency and constitutional amendments.
